How it works
- The panel turns red. After a random delay — the point is that you cannot time it — it turns green. Click, tap, or press spacebar the instant it does.
- Five trials score. Clicking while the panel is still red is a false start: the trial is flagged and dealt again, and it does not score. You always finish with five clean times.
- Your result is the median of the five — the middle value once they are sorted — plus your best, your mean, and the full per-trial list, so you can see exactly which click the median came from.
- Mouse, touchscreen, and keyboard all work. Results are saved in your browser's local storage only; nothing is sent anywhere.
What is a good reaction time?
Published studies of simple visual reaction time in adults mostly land in the range of roughly 200 to 300 milliseconds, with lab averages near the bottom of that range and online tests near the top. Human Benchmark, a popular online version of this test, publishes a user median around 273 ms — and that number includes everyone's monitors, mice, and browsers, not just their nervous systems.
We will not tell you your percentile, because we have not run a norming study and we are not going to invent one. What this test can tell you honestly: your median today, your best today, and whether either number moves when you come back and retest on the same device.
Why the median, not the average
A mean is at the mercy of one bad trial. Guess the green early and get lucky, and your average looks superhuman; sneeze during trial three, and it looks like you fell asleep. The median takes the middle of your five sorted times, so a single outlier in either direction changes nothing. We still show your best and your mean — they are interesting — but the headline number is the median, because it is the one a fluke cannot buy.
False starts are handled the same way a measurement should be: clicking during red flags the trial and deals it again. We do not average in a punitive fake time, because a penalty number is not a measurement of anything. You just owe the test one more clean trial.
The part of your score that is hardware
Between the panel turning green in code and your click registering, tens of milliseconds pass that have nothing to do with you. A 60 Hz monitor only draws a new frame every 16.7 ms, so the green can exist before you are physically able to see it. Your mouse, touchscreen, or keyboard adds its own sampling delay, and the browser adds scheduling on top.
This is why your score is comparable on the same device only. Testing on your laptop today and a friend's 240 Hz gaming rig tomorrow does not compare your reflexes — it compares the rigs. Pick one device, keep using it, and watch the median.

What is a good reaction time?

If you score under 200 ms on an ordinary laptop, the likeliest explanations are anticipation or very good hardware, in that order. We do not assign percentiles or tiers, because we have not normed this test against a population and making that number up would be lying.
Why is my score the median of 5 clicks?
Because the median cannot be bought with one fluke. Guess early once and get lucky, or get distracted once, and an average swings wildly; the median is the middle of your five sorted times, so a single outlier in either direction does not move it. The results screen shows your best, your mean, and all five trials anyway, so nothing is hidden — the median is just the number worth tracking.
What happens if I click too early?
That is a false start: the trial is flagged, does not score, and is dealt again, so you always finish with five clean times. We do not average in a fake penalty time, because a punishment number pollutes a measurement. There is no way to grind out a good score by guessing — an early click just costs you another round of red.
Can I improve my reaction time?
Somewhat, by boring means: sleep, not testing at 2 a.m., and a couple of throwaway warm-up rounds before the ones you count. Practice helps a little and is specific — retaking this test mostly makes you better at this test. The biggest jump most people can get is hardware, since a high-refresh monitor and a wired mouse can shave real milliseconds off the score without making your reflexes any faster. None of this is medical advice, and this test is not a medical or diagnostic tool.
Why is my reaction time different on my phone?
Different device, different latency chain. Touchscreens sample your finger at their own rate, phone displays refresh on their own schedule, and mobile browsers schedule input differently than desktop ones — each step adds or removes milliseconds that have nothing to do with you. Scores from this test are honest comparisons only against your own scores on the same device. Cross-device bragging is measuring the devices.
How many clicks per second is fast?
Different skill, different test. Reaction time is one clean response to a stimulus you cannot predict; clicks per second is raw repetition rate, where most people manage around 5 to 7 and dedicated techniques go higher. This site has a CPS test for that, and a typing test if your fingers want a longer argument. This page only cares about the first click.
Is the reaction time test free?
Yes. Free in your browser, no download, no sign up, no account, and your results stay in your browser's local storage — nothing is sent to a server. It is a burger website; we have no use for your data.
Does the reaction time test work with a keyboard?
Yes — spacebar works, along with mouse click and touch. Keyboards have their own scan latency, so spacebar times and click times are not exactly the same measurement; pick one input and stick with it if you are tracking progress.
