About Rename America

Rename America is a map of the United States that anyone can edit. Pick any labelled place, a city, a state, a lake or a mountain, and give it a new name. The new name replaces the real label on the map for everyone, immediately, until the next person decides they have a better idea and overwrites it. There are no accounts, and every place keeps a history of what it has been called.

It launched in September 2026 and thousands of places were renamed in the first weekend, mostly by people who found it on X and Reddit. It is only the United States: renaming things outside the border is not possible, on purpose.

How to play

  1. Tap or click a place label on the map, or search for one by its real name.
  2. Type the new name and submit. It shows up on the map right away.
  3. Open a place to see its rename history, or report a rename that should not be there.
  4. Share a link to a rename; the link unfurls with the new name on it.
